There were untrue stories floating around about him. Some were the usual tales of close calls with ghosts he was trying to salt and burn. Others made him shake his head. Like the one where he took out an entire coven of witches armed only with salt packets swiped from a restaurant. Or the one was that he decapitated a vampire with a steak knife. Or he exorcised a baker's dozen of demons simultaneously.
He didn't care that they were exaggerations, half-truths and outright fantasy. If it made the supernatural more afraid of him, John wouldn't bother correcting the stories.
